Born in Ohio on March 12, 1836, John Bamford served in the 8th Missouri Volunteer Infantry (US).   He married Martha Rebecca Wonder, had been an Army nurse in the Civil War.   They lived in Illinois after the War, and in the early 1870's, they left the Midwest and moved to Oregon.   Two of their four children were born in Illinois, and two were born in Oregon.
 
John Bamford died on May 16, 1923.   Both John and Martha are buried at Oakville Cemetery, just south of Albany, Oregon, on the banks of Muddy Creek.
